Seeing a new Ford Mustang that isn't a rear-wheel drive gasoline-powered V8 is a bit of a shock. But the new electric Ford Mustang, dubbed the Mach-E GT Performance Edition, has its own unique identity. While these cars aren't widely available and have the inherent practical challenges of electrics, they will be here at Peach State Ford in Cedartown, GA soon. So this is a car our customers in Dallas and Rockmart GA might want to know about.

Performance fundamentals

The 2021 Mach-E Performance Edition at Peach State Ford is an SUV equipped with two electric motors, one for each axle. The combination produces 400 horsepower and a muscular 634 lb-ft of torque. The 20-inch wheels look good wrapped in all-season tires designed for, what else? Performance. Other performance factors: Brake rotors are bigger and the suspension has been retuned to enhance speed, braking, cornering and overall handling.

A performance personality

The gas-powered Mustang GT is known for straight-line speed so Ford engineers were careful to maintain that part of the Mustang's DNA. The Mach-E gets off the line fast and in the absence of a traditional transmission to hold it back, the two motors are nearly always in the sweet spot of their powerband. Surprisingly, the Mach-E starts breathing hard as you approach triple-digit speeds but it's still going pretty fast.

Performance metrics

Editors at MotorTrend clocked the 2021 Mach-E Performance Edition doing zero-to-60 in a breathtaking 3.6 seconds. That was just one tenth of a second behind the editors' same zero-to-60 test of the 2021 Tesla Model Y Performance model. But the Mustang was outperforming its own V8 cousin, the 2021 Mustang Mach 1 by seven-tenths of a second.

Handling

The new 2021 Mustang Mach-E Performance edition will energize sports car afficionados around Bremen and Temple GA with its adroit handling. This SUV weighs almost 5,000 pounds but conceals it well with its precise steering. The ride is firm and minimizes body roll nicely. When you switch into sport mode, cleverly called "Unbridled," there's an exhilarating amount of oversteer being allowed, maximizing the fun quotient.

Stopping power

When you're driving a car that can go as fast as the 2021 Mustang Mach-E Performance edition, it's important to be able to slow it all down very quickly when needed. One expert said this vehicle handles that responsibility as well as any EV he's tested. The 60-to-zero distance is a full eight feet shorter than the comparable Tesla Model Y, so the Mustang's stopping power is clearly more effective than the rival Tesla's.

A note of caution on charging

When using a 350-kW fast charger, the 2021 Mustang Mach-E Performance edition takes about 45 minutes to raise its charge from 15% to 80%. The charging time is a challenge, but the bigger issue is that EV owners will want to get above 80% as an extra cushion. When you do, the charge drops from 90-kW down to 13kW, so owners of the Mach-E will have to spend a fair amount of time just charging. That's something you simply have to plan for.
