First came the Bronco, a legendary 4x4 returning after a more than two-decade hiatus to reclaim the title of king of the off-roaders. Next was the Maverick, a compact truck with a standard hybrid engine that delivers pickup versatility without imposing space requirements. Now, Ford is resurrecting yet another classic moniker, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning. And as a completely battery-powered pickup with massive capacity and full electric generator capabilities, it's perhaps the most fitting vehicle nameplate ever. Deliveries are scheduled to begin next spring, but reservations are open now, and official orders start November 1, 2021. Here's a quick overview of what the future of trucks has to offer.

How is the F-150 Lightning Powered?

The F-150 Lightning receives mountains of motivation from a pair of axle-mounted electric motors producing a combined 426 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of near-instant torque. An extended-range battery will also be available, boosting horsepower to 563. The F-150 Lightning has towing and payload capacities of 10,000 and 2,000 pounds, respectively.

What is the range of the F-150 Lightning?

The F-150 can travel an estimated 230 miles between charges with the standard battery pack. The available extended-range battery pack increases range to an estimated 300 miles.

How long does it take to charge the F-150 Lightning?

The 80-amp Ford Charge Station Pro (included with extended-range models and available for standard-range models) can charge a standard-range F-150 Lightning battery in about 10 hours. The extended-range battery is capable of drawing more power and can be replenished in just 8 hours. The F-150 Lightning is also capable of 150-kW DC fast charging, which can fill both battery types from 15% to 80% in less than 45 minutes.

Does the F-150 Lightning function as a generator?

When connected via the available 80-amp Ford Charge Station Pro, the F-150 can serve as a reserve power source. If the grid goes down, Ford Intelligent Backup Power enables the F-150 Lightning to output 9.6 kW of peak energy. A fully charged extended-range F-150 Lightning can power a full home for up to three days* or more, depending on usage.

How big are the F-150 Lightning's cab and bed?

What technologies are included with the F-150 Lightning?

The Ford F-150 Lightning features SYNC 4, Ford's latest innovative infotainment system with cloud-based connectivity, intelligent voice command control, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. F-150 Lightning LARIAT and Platinum models include a 15.5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen with SYNC 4A, which includes enhanced voice recognition, connected navigation, and more. An available scale feature automatically measures payload weight and displays load information on the central touchscreen. The scale can also be zeroed out to find the approximate weight of additional items.

The F-150 Lightning will also offer an array of smart towing technologies, including Pro Trailer Backup Assist, Trailer Reverse Guidance, and a Smart Hitch that measures tongue weight and aids weight distribution.
